Jazz Animals

  1. Soil

I am soil
All the dirty, dirty things I’ve done
Still it amazes me
All the good that grows out of me
By the light of the sun

Red clay soil
What it touches it stains
I fall to the ground through a sifter
I’m stuck to the bottom of the sole of the shoe of a drifter
And I hope and pray, and pretend one day I’m going to change

I am soil,
Bury your dead in me
Let the rain run off your sins
And as the roots grow deeper
The grass is always greener
Up above… in the wind.
